DISCOVERING LISBON

Lisbon is a city that makes you want to go exploring, to discover whatever might appear in every neighborhood, on every street. It’s a safe and friendly city, relatively small but with so much to see. It’s an ideal place to spend a few days or as a starting point for touring the country. It’s old. It’s modern. It is, without doubt, always surprising.

You may choose to have a driver at disposal during the night or head to the Fado Restaurant by your own means. We'll arrange all the details about your reservation.

Fado is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, but probably with much earlier origins. Commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, in popular belief, fado is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness, and melancholia. This is loosely captured by the Portuguese word saudade, or "longing", symbolizing a feeling of loss (a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent lifelong damage).

Continue up the narrow streets of the old town reaching the Giraldo square where the Inquisition once had its headquarters. Visit the millennium-old Roman Temple and visit the interior of the 13th-century cathedral. In the 16th century, Évora thrived with culture and tradition in its university as much as it still does today. Finish your walking tour with the wonderful 16th-century university, once a prestigious Jesuit college.

Visit the Castles of Marvão and Castelo de Vide

Climbing up to the Castle Marvão

Anyone who knows Marvão will certainly say that you are at such a height that you can see the backs of the birds flying by. And it is quite true. Just go up to the Castle and enjoy the immense scenery.

This medieval walled town is one of Portugal’s treasures, where you are welcomed and feel a limitless tranquillity. Marvão is known for its narrow streets and picturesque recesses, its Manueline pillory, and its Gothic windows and wrought iron balconies.

From Marvão, you may continue to the town of Castelo de Vide.

The castle surrounded by whitewashed houses stands out in the landscape and comes as a surprise. A greater surprise, however, is in the town itself, where one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Portugal can be found.

In the morning, start your day visiting Tomar!

The former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, Tomar is a city of great charm for its artistic and cultural wealth, whose greatest expression is in the Convent of Christ, one of the chief works of the Portuguese Renaissance.

Climbing up to the Templar castle and discovering the monumental work of the Convent of Christ is a must. The Charola (Rotunda) is the oldest part. This Templar chapel was built in the 12th century, like the castle, which was at the time the Kingdom’s most up-to-date and advanced military set-up, inspired by the fortifications of the Holy Land.

Tomar has not only witnessed the fighting of the Christian Reconquest in the 12th century but also preserves an interesting testimony to the Jewish religion, in the old 15th-century Synagogue, currently the Abraão Zacuto Luso-Hebrew Museum, devoted to this distinguished 15th-century astronomer and mathematician. Located in the former Rua da Judiaria, it contains a valuable documentary and epigraphic collection. Note the holes at each corner which were used to place earthen jugs on the wall in order to improve the acoustic conditions of the house.

Visit Fátima

The apparitions of Fatima have developed immensely the local town into one of the largest centers of Marian cult in the world. The major manifestations of devotees are held at May 13 and 13 October (the Procession of candles takes places on the day 12, and the Farewell procession takes place on the day 13, thus ending the celebrations). Visit the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima: This Marian pilgrimage center evokes the apparitions of our Lady to three Shepherd children Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, occurred in 1917 and recognized in 1930. The site was a country ground called Cova da Iria and belonged to Lucia parents, who later donated it to the sanctuary. It was here that the first appearance took place.

Visit Batalha

Built in 1386 to keep a vow by Portuguese King Dom João I to the Virgin Mary that he would build it if Portugal defeated Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14th August 1385. The Monastery of Batalha, a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic, is a magnificent piece of architecture that combines various influences from its lengthy period of construction, which lasted several reigns. Outstanding in the interior are the Founders' Chapel with its fine stained-glass windows, the cloisters, the Unfinished Chapels with their Manueline and Flemish Gothic features and the Chapter House.

Visit the Traditional Farmers' Market of Caldas da Rainha

Although there are no historical records of such an offering, the truth is that the Street Market from Caldas da Rainha, commonly known as Fruit Square, continues to run daily in the primitive place where it began its activity during the 15th century. Every day of the week the colored benches are assembled, giving place to the only Daily Outdoor Market in Portugal. The habits of the farmers and other producers have been maintained for six centuries, making this market a truly unique experience.

Visit the Castle of Obidos

The medieval town of Óbidos is one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal.

Quite close to the capital and located on high ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos has had a strategic importance in the territory. It had already been settled prior to the Romans’ arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century, and it became part of Casa das Rainhas (Queens’ Estate), who improved and enriched it throughout the various dynasties. This is one of the main reasons for the high concentration of churches in this small place.

The local cuisine features bouillabaisse made with fish from the Óbidos Lagoon, which will taste even better if accompanied by the wines of the region of Oeste. Another attraction is the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos (sour cherry brandy), which can be enjoyed in various places, preferably drunk from a small chocolate cup.

Visit Nazare fishing town

Nazaré beach, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has one of the most ancient traditions connected to fishing in Portugal. The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town’s seafront, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-colored awnings that decorate the white sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water.

This is the beach in Portugal that retains the more colorful fishing traditions, and it’s not uncommon to encounter fishmongers who still wear the traditional seven skirts.

These days, Nazaré’s major attractions are the waves and surfing, thanks to the "Nazaré Canyon", a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of perfect giant waves. It is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometers along the coast, reaching a depth of 5,000 meters.

Play, run, jump and laugh at the beaches of São Martinho and Foz do Arelho.

Time to relax in the beach of São Martinho do Porto, the sands here continue for an approximate 3 kilometers forming a shell shape around the sheltered bay that is home to São Martinho do Porto Beach. The calm sea represents the perfect conditions for both children and nautical sports such as windsurfing, sailing, and canoeing.

On the confluence between the Óbidos Lagoon and the sea, Foz do Arelho Beach throws up the choice between two very different types of beach. On the one side the Lagoon, a place of great natural beauty with its banks covered in thick vegetation and its gentle waters ideal for children and windsurfing, benefiting from the breeze that normally blows here.

Half Day Private Guided Tour in Coimbra

Welcome to the capital of Beira Litoral Province, named Aeminium by the Romans in 400ad, was also the former capital of the Kingdom of Portugal. One of the most beautiful cities of Portugal, keeps several historical monuments, medieval churches, and the most important library in Portugal! Stored treasures and rare single volumes from various fields of knowledge. Coimbra, located on the River Mondego, is in the geographical center of Portugal, it has more charm in the streets of the famous academic republics, medieval narrow streets, with courtyards, arches, and eaves flowers, cafes, galleries and bookstores.

Coimbra also housed the forbidden love of King Pedro I and the Spanish Galicia Lady Inês de Castro, who was executed by order of King Afonso IV, who saw the danger in this love of a subjugation to Castile. Inspiring poets and writers, its history remains part of the city's heritage.

Entering the city of Coimbra we’ll find several traces of the past. Nevertheless, there’s still a blow of youthfulness with the big student community arriving every year to the old University. This monument should indeed be one of the highlights of your visit and you cannot miss the University chapel and its Baroque library.

Visit Aveiro to discover a landscape dominated by water.

Aveiro, next to the sea and the ria (estuary), is crossed by a network of channels through which moliceiros (local boats) meander. These slim, colorful vessels used to be used to collect algae and seaweed, and today are for sightseeing trips. Aveiro has a number of buildings in Art Nouveau style that are worth seeing. Many are situated along the main channel, but there are some off the beaten track and in other locations. The location of the buildings is indicated in a guide available at the Tourist Office and you can get to know this style even better in the Museum dedicated to it.

At the end of the 1980s Quinta de Covela was acquired by businessman Nuno Araújo who invested heavily in the estate's vines and wines, and created the brand Covela. Over the next years, the wines gained a reputation nationally and internationally with their modern labels and distinct blends. Visit the charming town of Amarante

Amarante is a small town located at the foot of the Douro Valley, being a very central place, it is a perfect starting point to explore both the Douro Valley and the city of Porto. The River Tâmega runs through the town and crossing this waterway is an arched bridge, the São Gonçalo Bridge

Nowadays, cafes and restaurants make the most of their riverside location. Buried in the chapel of a church and monastery now bearing his name, São Gonçalo is a well-known local saint strongly venerated. Born here in the 12th century and his ability to heal the sick persons, earned him his special status.

Visit the Cradle of Portugal - Guimarães

Guimarães is considered the birthplace of Portugal because Afonso Henriques, who came to be the first king of Portugal, was born here.

The historical center in the area that was within the Guimarães city walls, is associated with the formation and identity of Portugal and was classified a World Heritage site based on the originality and authenticity applied in its restoration. The city still has a harmonious, well-preserved heritage that is evident in the graceful iron verandas, granite balconies, and porticos, mansions, arches connecting the narrow streets, paving slabs smoothed by time, towers and cloisters. For a moment you might imagine yourself to be in a medieval setting, where the nobility built their houses over time.

Viana do Castelo - A city of traditions and great medieval charm

Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal. Its involvement in the Portuguese Discoveries and, later on, cod fishing shows its traditional connection to the sea.

The special geographical situation of the city, next to the sea and to the mouth of the river Lima, can be seen from the Santa Luzia hill. This stunning view and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a revivalist building by Ventura Terra, of 1898, could be your starting point for visiting the city.

Viana is rich in palaces emblazoned with coats of arms, churches and monasteries, monumental fountains and water features that constitute a wealth of heritage worth visiting. At the Tourist Office, you can ask for a brochure and choose a route inspired by Manueline, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Deco or tile architecture.

Viana - also known for its filigree gold work - has maintained its traditions, as can be seen in the Museu do Traje (costume and gold museum), the Municipal Museum (emphasis on the typical Viana tableware that is displayed here) and the ship Gil Eanes

But Viana do Castelo is also considered a "Mecca of Architecture" thanks to the many important names in contemporary Portuguese architecture who have designed the city’s amenities and spaces. This is the case of the Praça da Liberdade by Fernando Távora, the Library by Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Youth Hostel by Carrilho da Graça, the Axis Hotel by Jorge Albuquerque and also the Viana do Castelo Cultural Centre, by Souto Moura, amongst many others.

Private visit to Taylors Port Wine Lodge

Included:

  • Private Visit with wine expert
  • Wine Tasting of 4 Premium Wines - Signature Tasting - CHIP DRY, LBV, TAWNY 10 YEAR, TAYLOR’S VINTAGE 2009

About the Port Wine Lodge:

Taylor’s Port wine cellars in the heart of the historic area of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from the old city centre of Oporto, house most of the company’s extensive reserves of wood aged Port as well its Vintage Port cellars. The cellars are long cool, dark warehouses, their thick granite walls and high ceilings helping to keep out the heat and maintain an even temperature throughout the year.

This ensures that the wines age slowly, gradually acquiring the sublime complex flavours and aromas of maturity. Wines in the cellars age either in cask or in vat. Casks are seasoned oak barrels usually holding around 630 litres of wine. They are used mainly to age Tawny Ports, in particular the smooth and mellow 10, 20, 30 and 40 Year Old Tawnies of which Taylor is the leading producer.

While Port matures in wood, a small proportion is lost each year to evaporation. The part which evaporates – commonly known as the ‘angel’s share’ – is composed of moisture and spirit. As a result, the aromatic components which remain in the wine gradually become more concentrated as it ages. The evaporation of the spirit causes the development of the black ’Angel’s share fungus’, Baudoinia compniacensis, on the roof tiles of the lodges, making it easy to see from the air where the wine is stored.
